A Grand Design

A getaway on a charming island may be just what Alyssa needs—if only she can let go of her past.

When Alyssa Denham, a single career woman, wins a fun getaway for two
on Mackinac Island where her grandmother lives, she gives her carefree
best friend a call. Together, they tour the old shops and hidden
treasures of the quaint island while helping Alyssa’s grandmother piece
together an heirloom quilt. Their quest gains them entrance into the
homes of many longtime residents of the island, parts of the city that
are otherwise off limits to tourists.

As the quilt’s story takes shape, Alyssa gains amazing insight into
her grandmother’s life . . . and attracts the attention of the handsome
Scott Whitman, an island resident in charge of hotel transportation.
Will memories of her past keep Alyssa from letting go? Or will the quest
to piece together the heirloom quilt restore Alyssa’s fractured
heart—and bring healing to her entire family?
Amber Stockton isn't a new author to me. Her book A Grand Design is just another of her excellent books. She's a wonderful Christian author. It is so nice to have Christian books that you can get lost in and forget about the worries of the day for awhile. A Grand Design is a wonderfully sweet romance and a nice addition to the Quilts of Love series. The Quilts of Love series books are wonderful stand alone books with a quilt as a center theme and written by various authors.
Amber Stockton is an award‑winning author, a national
speaker, and a direct‑sales brand partner with Nerium International. She
lives with her husband and fellow author, Stuart Vaughn Stockton, in
Colorado. They have a daughter and a son, and an Aussie/retriever mix
named Roxie. Three of her novels have won annual reader’s choice awards.

Dawn Carroll was born in London, to a family who loved to
read – and who also moved house with great regularity. One of the first tasks
on arrival at each new home would be to find the nearest lending library, with
the result that Dawn grew up with a great love of books. Encouraged by family
and teachers, Dawn also started to write short stories.

In adulthood, Dawn’s busy life as a hospital doctor left
little time for leisure writing. Indeed, The Banana Bunch stories would
probably never have been written had Dawn not, one fateful day, discovered that
falling from even a very small tightrope can have devastating consequences… but
that’s another story!

Unable to return to her chosen profession, things seemed
very black for a while. And then The Banana Bunch monkeys bounced into Dawn’s

Since then the monkeys (and Dawn) have been having a great
time – telling the stories of their adventures in print and online, and also traveling far and wide to source new story ideas and to meet new friends. Find

If you love the antics of monkeys then you'll love reading The Banana Bunch. It's a crazy, fun and hilarious bunch of monkeys. The Banana Bunch is a tight family line that sticks together through thick and thin, good and bad. They are there for each other. Encouraging each other and helping out where they are needed, and not needed. ;P It's a fun society and you'll chuckle with every stunt they pull as you turn the pages of this book.
Hawaii was the last place Grace Christiansen ever imagined she’d
vacation, much less fall in love. But when her family surprises her with
a cooking retreat in paradise, she is pulled—or maybe yanked—away from
her predictable, safe life and thrown headfirst into the adventure of a
lifetime.
Max Sharpe may make his living on the ice as a pro hockey player, but
he feels most at home in the kitchen. Which is why he lives for the
three-week culinary vacation he takes each year in Hawaii. Upon being
paired with Grace for a cooking competition, Max finds himself drawn to
her passion, confidence, and perseverance. But just when Grace dares to
dream of a future beyond her hometown, Max pulls away.

Wrestling with personal demons, Max fights against opening his heart
to a love he knows he should never hope for. And as his secrets unfold,
Grace is torn between the safe path in front of her and what her heart
truly desires. If love means sacrificing her ideal happily ever after,
Grace’s faith will face its toughest test yet.

The Buzz

"I highly recommend this adorable tale to children who don't want to go to sleep at night because they are afraid the Boogeyman will get them! They just might discover that this isn't true. " ~ 5 Star Review, Amy G., Amazon

"My little one and I thoroughly enjoyed the story (he made me read it twice as soon as I took it out of the package and I had to distract him with Monsters University to get away to write a review), but the real treat to me was stashed in the cover blurb hidden away in the back of the book. It's written by Davon Washington and his son, Chase. Davon wanted to help young Chase understand how much work and effort went into providing the nice things he had, so he let Chase make this a project in which they could collaborate and Chase could get an idea of the value of hard work. To me, that's the best part of the story! " ~ 5 Star Review, Breeni B., Amazon

"I loved this book! The illustrations were such a big pull for me. It almost felt like watching a tv show in the sense that you are brought into the world of Jack the Boogey instead of trying to imagine the scariest non-monster possible. I do think that this is a great read for Young Readers because of the conflict and resolution. I enjoyed that Jack showed vulnerability (being upset over the children's misunderstanding that he was actually a helpful GOOD monster) and that it was OK to show emotion. This is a great lesson for all young readers. Sometimes when they see life lessons happening via forms of entertainment (books, movies, tv, et al) vs. just hearing about it from their parents, it sinks in a bit more." ~ 5 Star Review, LaToya, Amazon

Davon has made a career out of helping people bring their artistic dreams to fruition. The same people who more often than not do very little to enhance the tender minds of the culture that supports them. Creative thinking isn't a skill that you learn as an adult. It starts with that same imagination that we let run wild after we've mastered harder tasks like walking, talking and using the bathroom ourselves. It's Davon's mission to build a nation of creative thinkers one book at a time.
Davon and his six-year old son, Chase collaborated to bring Jack the Boogey is My Real Name to life. This is their first book.

Roman's If you were me and Lived in...series. I have four more countries that I reviewed: Russia, India, Portugal and Australia. It doesn't matter where you live; it is always interesting to learn about other cultures. I have enjoyed getting to know more about other countries through Roman's books. You not only learn about their way of life and interesting places to visit, but also learn how to say some words in their native tongue through these books. Why not make this summer a learning summer and pick up some of Carole's books for this if you were me series. You can visit Carole's web site here.
Australia
Roman recognizes that children love to discover the differences and
similarities of other people and places in far-off lands. In this
series, she describes details that kids can relate to. Tailored to
children from 3-to-8-years old, her writing is simple but does not talk
down to youngsters. Among the topics that are introduced in this journey
to Australia are the unusual indigenous animals, the extraordinary
Great Barrier Reef, the currency, the beloved game of cricket and the
national holiday, Australia Day, as well as the special nicknames people
have for one another and the curious taste sensation, Vegemite.
Summary: What do you need to feel happy about being different? Based loosely on real life experiences, this heartwarming and powerful book illustrates how self-awareness, and courage help a young boy named Raymond learn the difference between seeing things as they appear to be and seeing things as they are. Feeling "different and lonely" Raymond befriends a hippo while on Safari in Africa. Unlike other grey hippos, this hippo is pink. Ray is soon carried into a world beyond labels and challenging assumptions. You will never guess what happens next!

The Inspiration Behind the Story by Helen Hipp

Inspired by real-life adventure, the story behind the story unfolded when I went on an African safari back in 2001. The trip was lead by my father whose dream was to share the safari experience with his family. Little did I know that this trip was going to incite me to write a children’s adventure book but it did.
The storyline made it appearance when my family spotted a pod of hippos and one was pink! My son Ray fourteen at the time immediately named her “Rosie”. Curious and wanting to learn more about this hippo we asked the guide many questions about hippos and hippo behavior. Specifically I wanted to know why the pink hippo stood so far outside of her pod. The familiarity of the guides answer took me by surprise, he explained that “Rosie” was tolerated but not necessarily accepted by the herd because of her differences. As a parent of a child with special needs I immediately felt a strong affiliation with Rosie’s situation as did my son Ray who has experienced his own challenges with acceptance. Inspired, I decided to share the story with the world by weaving them into a children's adventure book that celebrates differences. The book is entitled “A Different Kind of Safari”. Find out what you can learn from Rosie the pink hippo, and how you can share those lessons with the children in your life.

I was sent ebooks of Lucy the dinosaur to review. These books would make the best easy readers for new sprouting readers. They are short and very easy to read books. Good for preschool-K, 1st graders. Each book has a different theme from leaning to count, learning about opposites, even one about summer games and another about a day at the beach. Why not have loads of learning fun with Lucy the dinosaur and her friends this summer. You can visit the web site here
I know I've posted about Carole P. Roman's pirate gang before (see post here); however, I was sent a few more books in the series. They are just as good as the first batch that was sent. If you have a pirate lover in your clan then they'll probably love these fun, imaginary tales on the high sea with Captain No Beard. What a way to pass the summer then on the high seas or in Captain No Beard's case on the bed, couch, deck, or porch-maybe even under a tree or in a tent. These stories are very adorable. Each book has a good lesson for kids to learn. You may visit Carole's website here.
The Funny Adventures of Little Nani is an excellent read-aloud book. I love the way the author keeps the reader engaged in the story, every two pages or so, she has sprinkled spots to stop reading and draw. The person(s) listening must be paying attention to the story and imagining things. What a creative way to bring in some drawing. I have found that kids like to draw while being read to.

Here's an example of the draw time on p. 22

Draw a picture of Drofxo in his cave. Draw him outside the cave, drinking a cup of coffee while enjoying the sunshine. What is that? Is that a turtle? Draw the turtle too. Maybe it's Thunder!

Author Bio:
Cinta Garcia de la Rosa is a Spanish writer who has loved the written
word since she discovered she was able to read books at age 5. Since
then, she has become a bookworm and reads around 100 books every year.
She also writes, every day, compulsively, even in the middle of the
night. You cannot control when inspiration hits you, can you? She writes
in English because she is convinced that in a previous life she was
British, so writing in English feels more natural to her than writing in
her native language. Yes, she is crazy like that. Cinta Garcia is the
author of “The Funny Adventures of Little Nani”, a collection of short
stories for children, and “A Foreigner in London”, a short story
published on Smashwords.

Book Description

Young Willie Walrus leaves his ice home to travel on an
adventure to Big West, where the town’s citizens desperately need help.
Arriving to cheers, he quickly runs into Old Walter, the One-Eyed Whale.
Colorful illustrations and action in Willie Out West takes readers to an old West town where the citizens expect Willie to save them. Can he?

Willie Out West is geared to young readers. It takes some imagination to think that sea animals can live in the wild west outside of water. 3-5 year olds may like the story. I'm not a big fan of ebooks yet, since I don't have a reader just a computer app. Reading a book on the computer just doesn't do much for me. Reading a book to a child on a computer is hard too. I'm still a physical book fan. kindles haven't won me over yet when it comes to reading them to children. However, this book is very creative, imaginative and the young ones would probably fall in love with the animal characters. The story line is good, being brave and standing up for what it right.
The Cat Who Lost his Meow is cute tale written in rhyme. He's a lazy cat until he loses his roar; then he must find his courage to go on a hunt for his meow. Which leads him to a dangerous spot. Upon finding his meow he becomes grateful and appreciative of what he has. Very good lessons to teach children at an early age. I'm sure any child will fall in love with the beautiful calico cat, Chester. They will probably even feel a bit sorry for Chester as he loses his voice and goes hunting for it.
Angela Muse was born in California to a military family. This meant that she got used to being the "new kid" in school every couple of years. It was hard trying to make new friends, but Angela discovered she had a knack for writing. In high school Angela began writing poetry and song lyrics. Expressing herself through writing seemed very natural. After becoming a Mom in 2003, Angela continued her storytelling to her own children. In 2009 she wrote and published her first rhyming children's book aimed at toddlers. Since then she has released several more children's picture books and released her first young adult romance series, The Alpha Girls, in 2012.

Summary: The author of the first interactive Grand Canyon ebook for children takes her readers on an exciting journey as a lively little dog befriends a California condor and an Abert’s squirrel, and together they explore the canyon.
What child wouldn’t want to go on the adventure of a lifetime with a great pup like Kristi Kay and follow her on a multimedia journey that is both fun and educational? Amazing stories told by her new friends keep you wondering what surprising new secrets they will reveal next. What happened to the people that lived in the canyon? Will the condors in the rescue program survive? This adventure story for elementary grade children offers an engaging way to experience the Grand Canyon.
For those who would like to learn more about the issues touched upon in the story, additional information is provided in the Kristi Kay Talks with a Ranger section at the end of the book via interactive media, photo galleries, maps, charts, and links to external websites.
This interactive ebook is especially appropriate for children 7-11 years old, and as a read aloud for younger children, and it would also be well-suited for an educational setting. Divided into 12 chapters, the book lends itself to be read in several sessions at the age appropriate pace.
“Mysteries of the Grand Canyon” is the first book in the A Cairn Terrier Travels to National Parks series, a series of educational adventure stories created to inspire appreciation and stewardship of our precious parks.

"A must have experience for young people. With its cute, intelligent looking dog, and a bird that looks like it was conceived by Dr. Seuss, it puts us into an animal society - so beautifully conceived in its civility, generosity, and interest and care for the world - that it is reminescent of books like Winnie the Pooh. These elements, set in the grandeur of the Grand Canyon, beautifully brought out by magnificent photographs and videos, make it a compelling book from both parents' and teachers' points of view. ~ Mr. Naturally, iBookstore Review

"Overall, this iBook provides a great introduction to the Grand Canyon to children who are about to visit it or who just want to learn more about this important National Park. It includes lots of beautiful photographs, the story is engaging and there is a huge wealth of information included. I found it a great opportunity to talk about the Grand Canyon with my son, and tell him about my own experiences visiting the park and hiking into the crater. I also really enjoyed learning about the California Condor and all the effort that has gone into the Recovery Program; it provided a great opportunity to talk about Endangered Species and our responsibility to help preserve them." ~ iMum

"Readers of all ages will enjoy this engaging story to discover one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World at the Grand Canyon National Park. This photographically rich and entertaining ebook is especially appropriate for 7-11 year olds and as a read aloud for younger children, and it would also be well suited for an educational setting." ~ The Appy Ladies

Marie finds it hard to believe, but this is now her lifestyle and she wants to share it through her photography and stories.
Marie von Minden was born and raised in Poland. She immigrated to Canada in 1982 and in 1999 she and her husband relocated to the United States. Like many Europeans, she was overwhelmed by the vastness and the beauty of North America and she developed a passion for landscape photography.
They began camping in the wilderness and connecting with nature on weekends and holidays, first in a tent and later in a cap-over camper. It was during those camping trips that a dream of full-time traveling and living in an RV evolved. In 2002 that dream became reality and they have been traveling in a 34 foot Airstream trailer ever since. America’s National Parks continue to be one of their favorite places to visit.
When Kristi Kay, a Cairn Terrier, joined them, the idea of a children’s book series about America’s National Parks as seen through Kristi Kay’s eyes grew as a natural extension of their lifestyle and love of nature. Through interactive adventure stories enhanced by photography selected from her vast photographic library, animation, sounds, videos, and unique graphics Marie hopes to express her gratitude for what has become her home, and to help cultivate appreciation and stewardship of these precious resources.
