Deadwood was hell's front porch. No lady had any business going to Deadwood, SD so people thought. But Mattie O'Keefe was on the run and she just wanted to be with her brother, who had gone to Deadwood promising to send for Mattie after he staked out his claim and struck it rich. Mattie was a real beauty who talked little of her past. She was running hopefully toward a promise. Never in her dreams did she ever think she'd call a canvas tent on a placer claim, "home." Mattie is a girl with "grit". She earned the name "Matt the Miner."
You'll fall in love with not only Mattie, but other characters such as Swede, Freddie, Tom English, Aron Gallagher, Aunt Lou, and little Eva, she will steal your heart. Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane even make in appearance in this story. This was a very enjoyable read. I highly recommend it. This was my first read by Stephanie Grace Whitson but I will definitely keep an eye out for more of her books.
