Hermie: A Common Caterpillar by Max Lucado

Are you thinking about Christmas yet??  Well, Hermie the Worm would delight any youngster on Christmas morning and all year long.  Hermie: A Common Caterpillar by Max Lucado is a excellent book.  I totally fell in love with Hermie from day one of reviewing him.  Your child will learn that being common isn't always a bad thing.  We all are special in God's eyes.  God is working on them and isn't finished with them.  These themes are much needed to help any child gain a healthy self-esteem.  The illustrations are beautiful too.  I haven't come across a Max Lucado book that I haven't fell in love with yet.  Just can't go wrong.  I'm sold.

Children's book - Katie & Kimble: A Ghost Story by Linda Thieman

This book was a delightful read. Any 7-10 year old (third/fourth grader) will find it easy and fun with short chapters. Katie and her family move to a new town because of her mother's job. Katie doesn't have many friends right at first in this new town as in most cases is the problem when kids move. Her dog is a loyal friend that helps her out after she falls into a hole. He summons help. Katie's family is a loving family and her parents are very open to talking things out with Katie. Katie has responsibilities around the house. Kimble is the ghost of a little girl that use to live in the house that Katie and her family move into. Kimble is a friendly ghost much like Casper the friendly Ghost. She helps Katie out and leaves gifts for her. Kimble shares with Katie a secret stairway to the attic and also her secret room that her mother made for her in the attic. Katie and Kimble quickly become friends. Oh, by the way, only small children and animals can see Kimble. Katie's mother never sees her, but she believes she's there for Katie. Thieman also sprinkles in humorous settings. In the book children will learn some Jewish customs. Kimble teaches Katie how to play dreidel. For teachers and homeschoolers there is a web site you can go to and download free classroom activities that go along with the book.

My Little Girl by Tim McGraw & Tom Douglas

This was such a delightful book. Father/Daughter relationship. What a day with dad can do to a little girl's spirit. In this book the authors showed how important a dad can be in the life a his daughter. Turning a nothing-in-particular day into an extraordinary-special day. The little girl starts the day off dressing for this special day: What a get-up she puts on. Their first place of business is the boring co-op. So she thinks; is she in for a surprise. They also spend time together finding pictures in the clouds, at lunch and in the swing. In the end the daughter is just happy spending the day with her dad.

The illustrator, Julia Denos, did a fabulous job at depicting the scenes. The book is so girly: Pink. The pictures are as exuberant as the story, itself. What little girl wouldn't want to find this book under her Christmas tree from her special person: dad. My girls are teenagers now but this will be kept to pass on to their girls someday. It is a keeper.

The Moon Shines Down by Margaret Wise Brown

When I saw this book up for bloggers to review I jumped at the chance. My daughters loved Good-Night Moon by Margaret Wise Brown. We wore that book out along with Dr. Seuss's books. Kids love rhythm and rhyme in the early years. My girls are older so I thought what a good book to have for them to read to kids they babysit for and future Grandkids (far future). This book was a lost transcripts of Margaret Wise Brown as the inside of the book alludes to, but you won't be disappointed.

Brown takes the reader down the path and around the world in the night with God and the moon shining down. In this book the reader is given the chance to visit many cultures and get a glimpse of what they might find if they visited that country with the moon shining down on them. They will visit a little Dutch boy and the the cows in the fields of Switzerland, moving on into the Far East. They will visit Mexico and the wonderful land of Australia, France and even go to the jungles of Africa where the moon shines down. There's even a look at the magical night of Christmas. The book even takes you into the far depths of the sea as we visit where the moon shines on all God's creatures living there. Your child will meet fireflies, crickets and sheep in the fields. What a way to end the day for your child to see God and the moon shining down on them. If my girls were still little I'm sure it would quickly become a night favorite just as Good-Night Moon did.

What I liked the best is that this book does bring God into it all. It doesn't leave Him out. Where doesn't the moon shine? You'd be hard press to find a place on this wide earth. You could also use this as a seek and find book having your child find certain creatures or things in the pictures. The illustrator did a wonderful job at bringing the night scenes to life on each and every page. What a gift to give at Christmas the gift of a book will last for years to come.
