Meet Margaret: 

Margaret McSweeney is a well-published author often writing online articles for Make It Better (the former North Shore Magazine) and freelance articles for the Daily Herald, the largest suburban Chicago newspaper. In addition, she has authored and compiled several books including A Mother’s Heart Knows; Go Back and Be Happy; Pearl Girls: Encountering Grit, Experiencing Grace, Mother of Pearl and Aftermath.

With a master’s degree from the University of South Carolina in international business, Margaret became a vice-president in the corporate finance division of a New York City bank and worked there 1986–93.

As founder of Pearl Girls, Margaret collaborates with other writers on projects to help fund a safe house for WINGS, an organization that helps women and their children who are victims of domestic violence, and to build wells for schoolchildren in Uganda through Hands of Hope. About the authors:

Kim Messinger, Janine Boyer and Shirley Brosius had a common bond of Christian service when Christ drew them together for their first small group meeting in January, 1998. Since then they have drawn closer through life’s joys and struggles and found God to be sufficient for their every need. They call themselves “Friends of the Heart” because their passion is to help women open their hearts and find joy in Christ.

Kim and Janine supported Shirley in writing Sisterhood of Faith: 365 Life-Changing Stories About Women Who Made a Difference, which was released by Howard Publishing, a division of Simon & Schuster, in 2006.  More recently the three women worked together to write another devotional book, Turning Guilt Trips into Joy Rides. This is definitely a book in the raw! by that it is unique in that the 23 stories are unedited and printed just as they are told by their storyteller, in their very own words.  I'm undecided if the takes away or adds too the book.  I guess for myself, the teacher in me, it bothered me to read spelling and grammar errors.   The stories are real life happenings of things that people went through.  Each person has a unique story and path, solution, and answer that they share from their heart.  They share how they found hope, strength and love in each life changing circumstance.  Read how they overcome abuses and addictions.  How their life was transformed and they found beauty in life.  Healing, comfort, peace, joy, happiness, love you find it all in this little book of short stories.

Real by Shelley Malcom

 First-time author Shelley Malcolm announces the Second Edition of her non-fiction book, “Real,” now available in hardcover. Malcolm delivers a remarkable work of inspiration with 60 biographical stories, each illustrated by a captivating photo by professional photographer Terilee Dawn Ouimette. The stories are deeply revealing, while the photos are anonymous, focusing only on each subject’s hands. Research for the coffee table-style book was accomplished through a series of interviews and photo shoots, with subjects ranging from adolescent to elderly, from former gangster to humble homeless, international refugee to hero-housewife, from pro athlete to Hollywood celebrity.

Originally published in March 2011, the book has been popular among widely diverse groups including youth and teens, women, parents and grandparents, men between the ages of 35 –65, craftsmen, surgeons, hand, massage and physical therapists and many others.

Each story in this book is a REAL inspiration.  When the book came in the mail my art enthusiastic teenage daughter made comment of it being so uck!  But then she opened the book and started reading the short one page stories and she was hooked so don't judge a book by its cover.  The stories are beautiful and the pictures make them become REAL when you know the story behind the hands. Hands aren't always attractive but the stories they can tell speak volumes if they could.  This is a good book to lay out on the coffee table and pick it up and read it when you just have 2-3 minutes of inspirational time.

Inspiration from a dream of similar images, that revealed the beauty in imperfections... the hand image is made beautiful by the life behind it, and it is a body part that is impossible to enhance or fake.

Is that why you chose the hands to symbolize a life lived?

The hand is more anonymous than a face or even eyes which show identity and emotion. Also, they portray our work, our affection, our worry, scars, and even our mistakes...

What is unique about Real?

I believe the concept is unique, the layout is different, and it feels like reading a yearbook or

journal. It can easily serve as a devotional and it appeals to a widespread audience.

What do you hope the reader takes away after reading Real?

The MS Project by Dr. Laina Turner-Molaski, PhD

Each chapter in this book is someone who has been diagnosed with MS and their story.  In reading I found that all these people had not only MS in common, but also time and time again they refereed to it's all in the attitude.  One person said, MS may have control of my body, but not my attitude.  Each person has their own story and how they are dealing with MS in their life.  It gave me a better understanding of what my friend, who has MS, goes through each day. While Dr. Laina Turner-Molaski did not write these stories each individual person wrote them, I must stay true to the curse word warning I have for each book I read and review.  There are a few writers that chose to use words that I consider curse words, (see post here) so be warned. It wasn't alot out of about 25 authors only a handful did use words I consider curse words.  This book did help raise an awareness of MS in me and learning a little more about the disease.  I loved the subtitle MS: Orange the new Pink.

I was so excited that I was asked by Dorothy at Virtual tours to host this tour.  I had overlooked it because I thought it was the same book as I had reviewed in Feb.  However, that one was Life Choices:  Navigating Difficult Paths.  This is second book in the series.  Life Choices: Putting the Pieces Together. So like me don't get confused if you already read the first book.
