Five Reasons Cats Make Better Authors Than Humans
By Sparkle the Cat

On my blog, along with my daily posts about my life, cat rescue, and my ever-popular cat-to-cat advice, I also write book reviews (books about cats only, of course!). I have been reviewing a book a month for about six years now, and I have come to the conclusion that cats make better authors than humans. Seriously! Look at the facts:

1. Cats don't procrastinate. We either do things or we don't. We don't sit around pretending to "think" about stuff like you human authors do.

2. We are great researchers. How did we know where you hid the cat treats? How did we work out how to open the cupboard or turn on the kitchen faucet? We'll never tell, but it just proves we are good at studying things, putting two and two together and figuring it all out. This is a necessary quality to have as a writer, especially for developing plotlines, mapping out a memoir, or writing a how-to book. And if you want to argue that we cats don't have you beat at this, well then, why can't you figure out how we cats figure out how to do things?

3. Cats have very active fantasy lives. How else could we turn a twist tie into a bug that is about to fly out of our grasp, or turn that dust bunny into a real bunny and stalk it? Clearly, we are masters at fiction. Of course, most of our plots revolve around bugs and stalking, but personally, those are some of my favorite storylines!

4. Cats are incredibly observant, sensual creatures. We are into scent, texture, the feel of the sun on our fur, the bright flap of a bluebird's wing, a dreamy scritch under the chin. We not only notice the little physical details of life, we revel in them. Humans tend to lumber through the day, not noticing very much. If you want to bring life to your writing, you had better start viewing the world the way we cats do!

5. We love books and all sorts of reading material. That's why we sit on them all, from the novel you were reading, to the Sunday newspaper, to the computer keyboard while you are trying to check out a blog post. You SAY you love books, but how many of you not only sleep with them, but ON them?

I know this is quite a lot for you humans to live up to, but if you try really, really hard, then maybe someday you can be nearly as good an author as a cat!

Sparkle is an award-winning author, blogger, advice columnist and supermodel. She is also a cat – a ruddy Somali of champion lineage, in fact, whose father, GC Tajhara’s Miles Davis, was twice on the cover of Cat Fancy. Sparkle’s first book, Dear Sparkle: Advice from One Cat to Another, won the Wild Card category at the 2007 Hollywood Book Festival and honorable mentions in several other contests. She also recently came home with the Pettie Award — the pet blogging equivalent of an Oscar — for Best Cat Blog. Sparkle lives in Los Angeles with two humans, two feline roommates (both rescue cats), and (unfortunately) a dog.

Dear Sparkle: Cat-to-Cat Advice from the World’s Foremost Feline Columnist (Adams Media) is her second book.

Because cats are clearly superior in intelligence to us. They can get us to wait on them, and have to do nothing in return.
