Raising Financially Confident Kids by Mary Hunt

Real-World Guide to Debt-Proof Your Kids
Syndicated Personal Finance Columnist Shares Practical Advice, Personal Experience

Our children are being groomed to become world-class consumers, and they are well on their way to becoming future debtors. The next generation is being manipulated by the advertising and consumer-credit industries who tell them they are entitled to whatever they want, when they want it, but with little thought on how to pay for it. Unless parents intervene, statistics indicate that the majority of kids will lead a life severely impacted by consumer debt.

It’s easy for parents to get hung up on the mundane side of parenting – cooking, cleaning, carpooling – and forget to teach money management skills. At best, parents have 18 years to teach their kids how to manage money skillfully. Failing to do that sets kids up for a lifetime of miserable debt. But there is hope and help for parents.

Personal finance expert Mary Hunt prepares readers to debt-proof their kids in Raising Financially Confident Kids. Readers learn how to develop a unique debt-proofing plan designed specifically for their children that will tear down attitudes of entitlement, build financial intelligence and neutralize the glamour of easy spending. Debt-proofed kids are guided by a set of values having to do with money, credit and debt.

Hunt shares her own experiences raising two sons, who are now financially responsible adults, and gives hope to parents in every financial situation. Her family was $100,000 in debt before they saw their sons’ entitlement issues and realized the importance of teaching their 8 and 7-year-old the basics of money management. There is good news for parents in financial crisis; they will learn alongside their kids and grow together as a family as they begin to educate themselves and change their outlook on money.

In Raising Financially Confident Kids Hunt takes on the nuts and bolts of debt-proofing your kids and gives practical advice for parents. Hunt systematically lays out her proven method, which is tailored for preschoolers through high school and designed to help parents:
Transform their children into effective money managers.
  • Educate their children and steer them away from consumer debt to protect their future.
  • Gradually turn over the money required for their care and support to their children.
  • Trust their children to be good stewards of a portion of the family’s resources.
  • Engrain money management skills in their children so the lessons will last a lifetime.

According to Hunt, “It takes relatively little effort to teach kids about money, and the payoff is enormous. If you are diligent to work this teaching into the normal course of family life, it will come as naturally as teaching kids good manners or how to do laundry. It will be as ordinary as teaching them how to mow the lawn or wash the car.”

I found this book to be a very easy book to read and seems the plan is just as easy.  The author shares 4 Basic Financial Values a family should have in this book.  Her plan has been tested and used by many.  There is a chapter devoted to future debtors of America and how they are won over.  The author explains the trouble with debt in a chapter.  One chapter is all about tearing down attitudes of entitlement.  The author will teach the reader how to develop financial intelligence and how to neutralize the glamour of easy spending.  Gives a chapter of do's and don'ts for preschool age, plan handling ages six to ten year olds and then ten through teens all good information.  Wonderful book for every home library to have.

Hunt was not always a personal finance expert, but lived through financial crisis and her family emerged with a healthier view on the value of money and the danger of debt. It took them 13 years to pay off over $100,000 in unsecured debt, and Hunt is on a mission to help other families learn from her mistakes.

Hunt is an award-winning and bestselling author, syndicated columnist and sought-after motivational speaker, who created a global platform that is making strides to help men and women battle the epidemic impact of consumer debt. She is founder and publisher of the interactive website Debt-Proof Living, which features financial tools, resources and information for her online members. Her books have sold more than a million copies and her daily newspaper column is nationally syndicated through Creators Syndicate, where it is enjoyed by hundreds of thousands of Everyday Cheapskate readers. Hunt speaks widely on personal finance and has appeared on shows such as Good Morning America, Oprah, Dr. Phil and Focus on the Family. She and her husband live in California.

Chasing the Wind by Pamela Ewen

This week, the
Christian Fiction Blog Alliance
is introducing
Chasing The Wind
B&H Books (August 1, 2012)
by
Pamela Ewen

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Until recently retiring to write full time, Pamela Binnings Ewen was a partner in the Houston office of the international law firm of BakerBotts, L.L.P., specializing in corporate finance. She now lives just outside New Orleans, Louisiana, with her husband, James Lott.

She has served on the Board of Directors of Inprint, Inc., a non-profit organization supporting the literary arts in Houston, Texas, as well as the Advisory Board for The New Orleans Pirate’s Alley Faulkner Society, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of The Tennessee Williams Festival in New Orleans; Pamela is a co-founder of the Northshore Literary Society in the Greater New Orleans area. She is also a member of the National League of American Pen Women.

Pamela’s first novel, Walk Back The Cat (Broadman & Holman. May, 2006) is the story of an embittered and powerful clergyman who learns an ancient secret, confronting him with truth and a choice that may destroy him.

She is also the best-selling author of the acclaimed non-fiction book Faith On Trial, published by Broadman & Holman in 1999, currently in its third printing.

Although it was written for non-lawyers, Faith On Trial was also chosen as a text for a course on law and religion at Yale Law School in the Spring of 2000, along with The Case For Christ by Lee Stroble. Continuing the apologetics begun in Faith On Trial, Pamela also appears with Gary Habermas, Josh McDowell, Darrell Bock, Lee Stroble, and others in the film Jesus: Fact or Fiction, a Campus Crusade for Christ production.

Pamela is the latest writer to emerge from a Louisiana family recognized for its statistically improbable number of successful authors. A cousin, James Lee Burke, who won the Edgar Award, wrote about the common ancestral grandfathers in his Civil War novel White Dove At Morning.

Among other writers in the family are Andre Dubus (Best Picture Oscar nomination for The Bedroom; his son, Andre Dubus III, author of The House of Sand and Fog, a Best Picture Oscar nomination and an Oprah pick; Elizabeth Nell Dubus (the Cajun trilogy); and Alafair Burke, just starting out with the well received Samantha Kincaid mystery series.

ABOUT THE BOOK

At 8:47 A.M. on Wednesday, October 12, 1977, new-to-town businessman Bingham Murdock flew his small plane into New Orleans, banking it in such a way that a ray of sunshine shot through the city at light speed.

Amalise Catoir saw the flash from her sixteenth floor law office window. Finally feeling alive after the death of her abusive husband, she imagined seeing the plane was a fate for her eyes only; a special connection between the unknown giver and she, the recipient of light.

But someone else saw it, a six-year-old Cambodian refugee in foster care for whom a sudden burst of brightness reminds him of artillery fire.

Destined to cross paths with the man and the child, Amalise doesn’t yet know the deeper spiritual lesson she will learn: that we are responsible not only for the things we do, but also for the things that we don’t.

Teaser Tuesday ~ The Magical World of Flower Fairies

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along, so I thought I would play for fun! Just do the following:
  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Of all the different kinds of magical creatures in the world (and there are many, many kinds of magical creatures in the world), flower fairies are perhaps the most elusive.

The Magical World of Flower Fairies by Buddy Mays

This ebook is mystical, magical and makes the flower fairies come alive.  As I read this book I thought the flower fairy was going to come off the page and visit me.  The illustrations are very colorful and real like.  Mays has a way of  transporting you into this make-believe world and you'd love to stay all day.  Even if you aren't a child if you love flowers and fairies I believe you'll love Buddy Mays' book The Magical World of Flower Fairies.   Sad to say this book is only available in  e-book form.  I'm still not sold totally on ebooks as I love the feel of a book and turning the pages.  This would be a nice one to just leave lay on the coffee table for when those little ones come to visit the illustrations are very nice.   This book is listed on Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble NOOK, and Smashwords.  You may visit the author's web site for more details.

We Believe in.....Picture Books

Candlewick’s very first review was for Can’t You Sleep, Little Bear? by Martin Waddell, illustrated by Barbara Firth. Publishers Weekly said, “Move over, Goodnight Moon. . . . Waddell’s tranquil tale is perfectly attuned to a child’s need for security and bedtime ritual; combined with Firth’s serene watercolors, it’s a triumph of genuine affection.” This was a fitting beginning to Candlewick’s launch and demonstrated the affection with which readers greeted our books.

We continue to believe in the importance of picture books and to publish them with great success, and so on August 31, 2012, Candlewick will launch a yearlong video celebration of picture books at www.readingstartshere.com.

Candlewick will share 365 videos about picture books – a new one each day – from our authors, illustrators, staff, family, and friends. The videos will be short, engaging, informal, and personal as each contributor shares what picture books mean to them, recommends favorite stories, and more. We invite you to visit www.readingstartshere.com for more information, and to celebrate picture books with Candlewick every day of the year!

Here is a sneak preview of the We Believe in Picture Books videos:

The Importance of reading to Kids by author Jo Linsdell

The importance of reading to kids

By Jo Linsdell

Jo Linsdell is the author and illustrator of the rhyming children's picture book OUT AND ABOUT AT THE ZOO. Find out more about her at www.JoLinsdell.com

We all know reading is important but are you familiar with the specific benefits of reading to your child before the age of 5 years?

As a parent, reading is one of the most important things you can do for your child. Books have the power to benefit toddlers and pre-schoolers in countless ways.

  • It builds a stronger relationship with you. Reading gives you the opportunity to have some quiet, relaxed, quality time together.
  • A higher aptitude for learning in general.
  • Basic speech skills. Reading out loud enhances the development of their spoken language skills and the ability to express themselves verbally.
  • Essential pre-reading skills. Children aren't born knowing we read from left to right or that text is separate from pictures. Reading together will help establish these skills and therefore make things easier for the child when they start elementary school.
  • Better communication skills.
  • Better grasp of the fundamentals of language. Reading teaches them pronunciation and grammar.
  • Encourages logical thinking skills.
  • Enhances concentration and discipline.
  • The knowledge that reading is fun!

The more children read, the better they become at reading. Reading should be viewed as a pleasurable activity and can provide children with endless hours of entertainment. Toddlers who are exposed to early reading will see it as an indulgence and not a chore, and are more likely to choose books as a form of entertainment as they grow older. Help your children appreciate the magic of reading!

Out and about at the Zoo by Jo Linsdell

The text is sing-song rhyming meter about a child and his mum (mom) day out at the zoo.  The pictures are big, bold, adorable, kid-friendly and very colorful.  They hop off the page at ya.  A very fun and quick read. It is a very easy read even beginning readers could read it with little assistance.  Want to bring a smile to a child's face this book will do it; it is just that type of book.  The illustrations are loveable and the theme is enjoyable.  Who doesn't love to visit the zoo?

You may visit the tour site and see what others are saying here.  Everything I've read so far is very positive. Also watch a video where the author reads the book.

Read Jo's guest post on The Importance of reading to Kids here.

Rhyming text and colourful pictures accompany this fun day out discovering different animals at the zoo.
