Debut author appearance ...Kellie Coates Gilbert

I was filled with mixed emotions when author Kellie Coates Gilbert personally contacted me to do a review for her book...Why? I was sad that I had to say, "No" Right at this moment in my life I am maxed-out.  I'm feeling a bit blogged down there are just too many books coming out that I'd love to read and just don't have the time.  I'm working on studying for my teachers exam and that is high priority on my list of things needing to be done.  I'm over committed in good books right now.  I have turned many down and have opted to post lots of just spotlight/giveaway offers this fall.  However, I felt honored in that the author, herself, was contacting me.  Right now as you are reading this I'm on vacation taking my oldest back to college for the fall.  However, Kellie so graciously provided me with some interview questions to post.  I decided to post this brief spotlight on Kellie since the book's release date is coming ever so close.  The date for this book to hit the shelves is Sept. 1st.  In October I will be featuring her book again with a spotlight and giveaway offer so be watching.  This book just so caught my eye and I would love to read it some day. I just couldn't give Kellie honest time right now so I'm just going to post some things to whet your delight for this new author and say congrats to Kellie on her first book being published and I hope she has many more books published.  Be sure to visit Kellie's site and learn more about her and this book.

When did you decide to become a writer?

I’m a former legal investigator and trial paralegal, who worked on many high profile cases, including the Jack in the Box e-coli litigation in the mid-nineties and the largest cattle fraud in the United States. People are often at their most vulnerable in these tense situations where much is at stake, which has allowed me a unique perspective on the human psyche. Early in my legal career, I recognized there could be value in telling stories about people facing life-changing circumstances.

I made a serious commitment to pursue my writing in 2004, when I attended my first writer’s conference at Seattle Pacific University. Driving home, a deep longing formed and I awakened to what I was always meant to do.

What did you do when you found out Mother of Pearl, your first novel, was going to be published?

After telephoning my husband, I walked outside, looked up at the sky and said, “Well now, aren’t You something?”

Years back, I’d prayed and asked for the outrageous. He heard.

Why did you want to tell the story of Barrie Graeber?

I didn’t even know how many things there were to be afraid of until I had my first child. From the moment that tiny infant was placed in my arms, a fierce need to protect bubbled from the deepest part of me.

As a novelist, I asked the question: What would a mother do if suddenly life took a turn and she learned the child she thought she’d protected had fallen into the hands of someone unsafe? And what if she found out too late?

Early, when the inception of this story was still noodling in my brain, I saw a sadly recurring event on the news, the story of a coach who had inappropriately been involved with a teenager. The cameras were honed on the major players in the courtroom, but I couldn’t help but wonder if that girl’s mom was seated out of view.

What was she feeling?

How did you prepare/research for Mother of Pearl?

Until I completed my research, I don’t think I was aware how prevalent this situation is, where adults cross proper boundaries and engage in inappropriate relationships with minors.

I spent time with Dr. Sherry Bithell, author of Educator Sexual Abuse, A Guide for Prevention in The Schools (Tudor House Publishing, 1991). Her book was cited in a U.S. Government study report on the issue. Her work helped me to understand how blurred the lines get in some situations and how often perpetrators are allowed to quietly resign and move to a new school, especially coaches.

Nearly a year after I turned in my manuscript to my publisher, the Sandusky/Penn State situation hit the news—another sad reminder of how often people look the other way when a sports program is at risk.

I’m not necessarily a “soap-box” novelist. I have no agenda. But, I would not be sad if readers close the last page of MOTHER OF PEARL with more understanding and a desire to keep an eye out for our kids.

Readers will be able to relate to this story on different levels. What do you hope readers will take away from it?

People have many layers, and never more than in family dynamics and hard times. I’m intrigued with the coping mechanisms we employ to fill our empty places, the chasm only God can fill.

When readers find themselves in the deep places in life, I hope they will think of Barrie Graeber and remember that life-changing circumstances can be conduits to His majesty.

How does your faith impact your writing?

St. Augustine tells my own faith story with this quote: “In my deepest wound, I saw your glory and it dazzled me.”

I try to paint that sentiment on every page, but in a subtle manner. I want my books to appeal to all kinds of readers – those who sit on church pews and barstools alike.

What’s your ideal writing environment?

A quiet, organized place with lots of light streaming through the windows, Pachelbel’s Canon playing on the stereo, and a large glass of iced tea on a coaster next to my MAC.

Did you have any expectations for your experience as a first-time novelist?

Lots of hopes, but few expectations. I’d heard too many stories from other novelists to believe the publishing journey is a panacea.

I do long for readers to cry with Barrie, and cheer her on as she risks everything she holds dear to bring the coach to justice.

Women are busy people and time is precious. Anyone who spends their hours immersed in the pages of my book is a treasure. I write for these readers, and I hope they find the time well spent.

 What’s next for you?

I blog regularly at www.kelliecoatesgilbert.com. Fun, light topics that only take a moment or two. (check out the post where I tell readers how I discovered a soup pot makes a great safety helmet during a tornado scare!)

And, I’m currently working on a manuscript about a wealthy Texas socialite who loses her Neiman-Marcus lifestyle when her husband is arrested for cattle fraud.

Thank you Kellie for sharing.  Kellie has shared a Teaser from her book visit here.  It is a good one.   Be sure to check out Kellie's website.  Also be watching in Oct. for the book giveaway I'll be having for Kellie's book Mother of Pearl.

main character/author interview

To benefit the readers of this blog, Shae of Whellein, the main character from DawnSinger, first of the epic fantasy trilogy, Tales of Faeraven, granted a rare interview to Janalyn Voigt, her author.

Janalyn: Tell me Shae, why you always seem to be at the center of trouble.
Shae: I often wonder that too. Problems just seem to follow me around. Maybe I’m too much like my brother, Daeven. He didn’t want to settle down to the responsibilities of a first-born son, so he ran away to sail the seas. They say wreckers lured his ship to its doom on the Coast of Bones. I don’t want to end up like Daeven. If only I could be more like my twin sister, Katera. She seems made for a simple life. It doesn’t help that sometimes visions warn me of lurking evil, or that souls touch mine in the night.

Janalyn: Visions of evil? Souls touching in the night? That sounds serious.
Shae: Things have gotten intense ever since Kai rode into the garden at Whellein Hold on the back of a wingabeast, a kind of winged horse ridden only by Guardians of Rivenn. Kai brought a summons that changed my life forever. But he was followed.

Janalyn: Followed? Why?
Shae: Ask Kai. He won’t tell me his secrets, no matter how irritated I become.

Janalyn: For those who haven’t met him, who is Kai?
Shae: I’m not certain I really know. He’s always been there, in the background of my life. But things have changed, and I’m not sure where I fit in his life any more.

Janalyn: Won’t he tell you that either?
Shae: He says he loves me, despite everything. I’m grateful for that anyway, especially after what happened that night with Freaer.

Janalyn: Care to elaborate? Let’s start with introducing Freaer.
Shae: Beyond the fact that he’s a musician, I don’t exactly know who Freaer is either. He fascinates me, and whenever he’s near I don’t feel quite – safe.

Janalyn: But something happened with this Freaer you don’t know?
Shae: Don’t look so smug when you say that! I’d answer your question but Kai told me not to tell.

Janalyn: *Sigh.* I begin to understand why trouble follows you around. So, is there anyone else we should know about?
Shae: Well, there’s also Elcon, heir to the throne of Faeraven. I’m drawn to him, and he seems kind. He’s sad right now because his mother is dying, and I think he’s a little scared. He’s young to become a High King, especially with trouble brewing in Elderland.

Janalyn: Do you think the evil you mentioned earlier lies behind the trouble in Elderland?
Shae: I don’t doubt it. There’s an answer somewhere in all the riddles that surround me. I know it. I only hope I can find it in time, and that I’ll have the courage to face the trials that come, no matter what they cost me. Maybe then I can redeem myself a little.

Janalyn: Thanks for being so candid, Shae. I appreciate this chance to get to know you better.
Shae: Thanks for thinking of me. I guess we’ll both find out what happens as you continue writing. What are the names of your novels again?

Janalyn: I’m glad you asked. The three books in the Tales of Faeraven trilogy are DawnSinger, Wayfarer and DawnKing.

DawnSinger by Janalyn Voigt

Paradoxical Truths Revealed

A new speculative fiction story releases this summer that captures several paradoxical truths, including: freedom comes through sacrifice – AND – victory comes through surrender. allegorical fantasy readers will be spellbound by the incredible imagery and symbolism throughout DawnSinger, authored by Janalyn Voigt. Some of the key points in the book include:

Freedom through sacrifice. When the willful but reverent main character, Shae, learns her secret identity, she has to decide whether to accept her true calling. Although it may cost her everything, the salvation of a nation hangs in the balance. Shae represents the church. We each must lay down our will and our lives to bring freedom to others.

Overcoming prejudice with unity. In DawnSinger, the clash is not over color of skin but between classes of being. Elderland was already inhabited by the Elder nation when the Kindren entered it from another world through a gate that closed behind them. The Elder accepted the Kindren's occupation of Elderland because they didn't want to live in the areas where they settled—areas within reach of garns (goblenesque creatures) and welkes (giant birds of prey). DawnSinger opens as an unknown enemy stirs strife between Kindren and Elder in an attempt to divide and conquer Elderland. As a result, the alliance of Faeraven, a group of Kindren kingdoms ruled by a widowed High Queen, begins to fall apart. This story arc, which spans three novels, is based in large part on Voigt’s father's experiences of prejudice as a half-breed Native American.

Serving rather than ruling. As the High Queen's health fails, Kai, the hero of DawnSinger, must choose whether to reign and rule in his homeland or to continue in service to the new High King at her death. Kai's decision inspires Shae to make her own.

Conquering fear by not letting it consume you. In Pilaer Hold, an ancient place of defeat for the Kindren, wraiths rush toward Kai and Shae's other protectors. They draw their swords, but the more wraiths they dispatch, the more arise. They learn that to defeat fear, something else is needed.

From the Back Cover: The High Queen is dying... At the royal summons, Shae mounts a wingabeast and soars through the air to the high hold of Faeraven, where all is not as it seems. Visions warn her of danger, and a dark soul touches hers in the night. When she encounters an attractive but disturbing musician, her wayward heart awakens. But then there is Kai, a guardian of Faeraven and of Shae. Secrets bind him to her, and her safety lies at the center of every decision he makes. On a desperate journey fraught with peril and the unknown, they battle warlike garns, waevens, ferocious raptors, and the wraiths of their own regrets. Yet, they must endure the campaign long enough to release the DawnKing—and the salvation he offers—into a divided land. To prevail, each must learn that sometimes victory comes only through surrender. author photo Janalyn Voigt, Author

Making Sense When life Doesn't by Cecil Murphey

Beloved author Cecil Murphey empowers readers to discover the good in every situation and to make life better because of adversities. Sometimes life gets messy. It’s cluttered with too many demands. Companies downsize. Love relationships end. Trauma hits. When chaos erupts, every person has a choice to make—to decide whether it’s the worst time of life, to find comfort in the way things used to be, to move on because change is forced, and then resent everything that happens, or to say, “This can be the best time of my life. I can try the things I wanted to do but never did.”

In Making Sense When Life Doesn’t, Cecil Murphey’s compelling stories, hope-filled insights, and gentle encouragement move readers with messy lives to the stunning realization that life won’t ever be perfect, but it can be good…even exciting!

Learning through the crisis that come our way is what author Cecil Murphey wants his readers to get out of his newest book Making Sense when life Doesn't.  We are all faced with tough times; how we come through them is the key to how we'll handle the next one that comes along--and there will be a next one.  The chapters are short most of them three pages.  I think only one chapter spilled over onto the fourth page.  Each chapter ends with a meaningful quote that goes along with the chapter them.

Example:  Chapter #27 title:  Starting Over
Chapter quote:  Because it's difficult to start over doesn't make it impossible or man I've made a mistake.  It means I've taken a risk, and I'm willing to try something new.
Murphey tells it straight and to the point.  Easy to read and understand.  You'll come away with many "V-8" moments.  Wow!  that is so true why didn't I think of it.  Murphey is very transparent and shares from his own life in many experiences he writes about.

Cecil Murphey has written or co-written more than 125 books, including the bestsellers 90 Minutes in Heaven (with Don Piper) and Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (with Dr. Ben Carson). His books have sold in the millions and have brought hope and encouragement to countless people around the world.

Murphey stays busy as a professional writer and travels extensively to speak on topics such as writing, spiritual growth, caregiving, significant living, sexual abuse, and recovery.

Prior to launching his career as a full-time writer and speaker, he served as pastor of Riverdale Presbyterian Church in Metro Atlanta, as a volunteer hospital chaplain for ten years, and was a missionary in Kenya for six. For more information, visit www.cecilmurphey.com

Food Family Style by Leigh Oliver Vickery

I have another cookbook to tell you about.  Boy is this cookbook full of wonderful surprises.  Some common ones that you've heard of and many not so common, but they are just as the title says...simple (a plus) & tasty (another plus).   There are about 365 recipes in this cookbook so I didn't have a chance to try them all.  I didn't even get a chance to try as many as I wanted, but my daughter and I did try a very tasty Island Smoothy (p. 22).  Oh, it was yummy.  I didn't have the pineapple juice on hand but did have a tropical juice that we substituted in its place and it was oh, so yummy and smooth and refreshing.  Nice hot summer day treat.

The author is known in the MOPS (mothers of pre-schoolers) circle and many of the recipes in this book that she shares were used during their MOPS groups so they are tried by kids and favorites of kids themselves.  So you could say they are KID approved....Here's a listing of the chapters:
  • Kids in the Kitchen
  • Snacks and Beverages
  • Breakfast
  • Sandwiches, burgers and pizza
  • Table Talk:  in this chapter the author shares cleaver little conversations table starters to help families get some table talk going.
  • Soups and Salads
  • Main Dishes
  • Side Dishes
  • Proportion Distortion:  discusses proportions and shares a few tips to help you discern the correct amount to serve.
  • Desserts
  • Menus for Special Occasions
  • Back to  Basics:  this chapter has lists of Kitchen and pantry essentials, spices that are good to have on hand and some healthy swaps instead of this....try this....
There is also a recipe Index listing main ingredient and what recipe you'd find it in such as...
  • Almond
  • artichoke
  • bacon
  • beans
  • chicken
  • caramel
  • chocolate
  • popcorn
  • seafood
  • many, many more categories this is just a brief listing as a  sample
I must say that I believe I'll be turning to this cookbook many times over.  I'd love to share one recipe from the book that we tried.  It is listed as a MOPS Favorite (so it is kid tested)

Live to Give by Austin Gutwein

It's hard to believe that a young boy can have it so all together.  I was so amazed as I read this book as to Austin's ability to bring such wonderful thoughts all together wrapped up in this book.  Very coherent and adult-like.  I was very impressed.  The theme throughout the book isn't about you but about God. You letting God use you.  God doesn't need you to accomplish His work, but He wants to use you to get the job done.  Austin tries to get his readers to see that God made us all unique and we shouldn't try to fin in a mold to be like someone else.  There is less stress in life if you just be yourself not try to be someone else.  Each chapter closes with study questions for the reader to ponder on as they endeavor to be who God created them to be and find where it is you fit in.  Austin helps the reader discover their own special gifts given to them by God. Austin challenges his peers to Live to Give and it is an awesome and much needed challenge for all teens.

About the Book:

Want to do something for God but don’t know what? Want to help others but don’t know who? Want to know what it is you’re really good at doing? Your gifts may feel small and insignificant. But God can use them to work a miracle!

Inspired by the biblical story of the feeding of the 5,000, "Live to Give" delivers a message of hope that we all have something to give. Written in the down-to-earth, candid voice of the gifted young man who as a kid founded a relief ministry that has saved and improved countless lives in Africa, "Live to Give" is the message that every teen needs to hear: You are more special than you know, and you can do big things.

Jesus proved that no gift is too small when He used five loaves and two fish to feed a crowd of thousands. And if no gift is too small, too ordinary, or too random, there is no limit to what the youth of today can accomplish!

A teenage philanthropist who has built a high school, two medical clinics, and a dormitory in Africa—all before the age of 16—Austin Gutwein shares how to take what may seem like the simplest of talents, gifts, and interests and use them for something Jesus can use to move mountains.

After the war, nearly dead from his injuries, it appears Seth got married. Oh, he's got a lot of excuses, but his wife isn't happy to find out Seth doesn't remember her. Callie has searched, prayed, and worried. Now she's come to the Kincaid family's ranch in Colorado to find her lost husband.

Callie isn't a long-suffering woman. Once she knows her husband is alive, she wants to kill him. She's not even close to forgiving him for abandoning her.

Then more trouble shows up in the form of a secret Seth's pa kept for years. The Kincaid brothers might lose their ranch if they can't sort things out. It's enough to drive a man insane--but somehow it's all making Seth see things more clearly. And now that he knows what he wants, no one better stand in his way.
