Where Courage Calls by Janette Oke and Laurel Oke Logan

Book Info

Her courage and her heart will be tested in ways she never expected . . .

Beth Thatcher has spent her entire life in the safe, comfortable world of her family, her friends, and the social outings her father's wealth provides. But Beth is about to leave it all behind to accept a teaching position in the rugged foothills of western Canada. Inspired by her aunt Elizabeth, who went west to teach school several years ago, and gently encouraged by her father, Beth resolves to put her trust in God and bravely face any challenge that comes her way.

But the conditions in Coal Valley are even worse than she'd feared. A recent mining accident has left the town grieving and at the mercy of the mining company. The children have had very little prior education, and many of the locals don't even speak English. There isn't even a proper schoolhouse. In addition, Beth's heart is torn between two young men---both Mounties, one a lifelong friend and the other a kind, quiet man who comes to her aid more than once.

Despite the many challenges, Beth is determined to make a difference in the rustic frontier town. But when her sister visits from the East, reminding her of all the luxuries she's had to give up, will Beth decide to return to her privileged life as soon as the school year is over?

These books of Carole P. Roman are excellent books to introduce children to many cultures.  Pre-Schoolers to 8 year olds will learn from Roman's If you were me and lived in...series.  It will take your child (student) on an adventure as books do.  They can't visit the countries physically, but they can go through a book.  Roman's books will take them on this adventure.  Expose your child to different cultures through this exciting series.  I just passed on my Norway copy to a little four-year-old girl that was in our church this past Sunday.  Her parents are taking God's Word to the people of Norway.  She was so excited to get the book and get a taste of what her life in Norway will be like.  You may visit Roman's web site and learn of all her books she's written.   As a elementary teacher I can say this is an awesome educational series giving students a little taste of different cultures.  .

About the author:
Award winning author Carole P. Roman is a former teacher turned businesswoman. She has successfully run a family business with her husband. Her most favorite job is being grandmother to her many grandchildren. She currently lives on Long Island with her husband.

http://www.pumpupyourbook.com/2014/01/16/pump-up-your-book-presents-why-i-am-an-independent-conservative-book-blast-win-a-25-amazon-gift-card/

ABOUT WHY I AM AN INDEPENDENT CONSERVATIVE

Liberty is never free—it comes at a cost. Throughout the history of the United States, our freedom has been safeguarded through immense sacrifice. But without the truth and knowledge of the past, this liberty can be threatened.

Bringing to light some of the key incidents of American history, author Karen Jourden seeks to safeguard liberty by remembering the past in Why I Am an Independent Conservative. She delves into early American history, the writing of the US Constitution, the American Civil War, and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s massive government expansion during the Great Depression.

Urging all Americans to do their research, Jourden offers her straightforward, unvarnished opinion on the state of America today. She tackles tough subjects, including threats to our freedom of speech, the rise of the ACLU, liberalism, environmental activism, and much more.

Keeping America free requires hard work, dedication, and, above all, vigilance. This treatise seeks to light the path for concerned Americans to take a stand, urging them to protect liberty and justice for all.

ABOUT ALINKA RUTKOWSKA

Alinka Rutkowska Alinka Rutkowska is a “Reader’s Favorite” Five Star Picture Book Author. She writes the “Maya & Filippo” Book Series for Children – travel books for kids with a positive attitude. She takes inspiration from her own travels while cruising with her husband and daughter around the world. She is positive, appreciative and happy 95% of the time and during the miserable 5% she thinks to herself quickly: “things always work out for me” and they do.

Alinka’s doesn’t really have a “to do” list but she does have a “fun things to do” list. It usually consists of writing, reading, reading her writing, writing in her diary, blogging, reading other blogs, commenting, breathing deeply, meditating, feeling the warmth of the sun on her skin, closing her eyes, breathing some more and thinking what a wonderful world she lives in.

Sometimes she takes a few minutes to pause and instead of doing something from her “fun things to do” list she just daydreams a little. She thinks of all the great things that she wants for her to happen and imagines how wonderful it will feel to be interviewed about them in the future. She’s already preparing the answers to those interview questions in her mind. She especially loves the part, in which she says that she achieved all these things because she spent a considerable amount of time visualizing them first.

Alinka loves to ski while listening to music at the same time, she enjoys an occasional glass (or bottle) of Barolo with dark chocolate, she loves cuddling with her husband and daughter. Alinka really likes tea, especially that last sip which is usually the tastiest.

You can visit Alinka’s website at www.mayafilippo.com, where she blogs daily for parents, travelers and authors.

Maisy and the Missing Mice by Elizabeth Woodrum

http://www.pumpupyourbook.com/2013/12/07/virtual-book-tour-pump-up-your-book-presents-maisy-and-the-missing-mice-virtual-book-publicity-tour/

Maisy Sawyer is not your average fourth grade student. She is a detective with a special skill for solving mysteries. She loves black and white mystery movies, cherry lollipops, and her dog, Reesie. When a thief known as The Black Boot steals the school’s mascots and her lollipops, Maisy sets out to solve the case. Can she help return the mice to their home in the science lab? Will she ever see her beloved lollipops again? Find out in the first book in The Maisy Files series.

This was a very quick and easy read.  I believe your third or fourth grader would love this book if they are into trying to solve mysteries.  Short chapters, no pictures for those readers that are ready to move on into chapter books and want to think they are getting into big stuff reading.  Fun to see how Maisy uncovers the mystery of the missing mice, lollipops and tooth.  They are all interwoven into one fun book kids will love to dig into.  Good book for a read aloud to younger children.  Wonderful mystery for kids to try to solve as they read along or are read to.
