What Would the Founding Fathers Think by David Bowman

You couldn't ask for a more plainer book explaining where we are heading in America if some action doesn't take place.  Written so middle school children can understand it, but a message adults need to read and adhere too.  I am so in agreement with everything this author has pinned in this book.  I think it should be required reading for 4-5 graders.  It is a message we so need to take very seriously in this day and time.  We need to not lose sight of the vision our forefathers had.  Written in a fun kid form cartoon type illustrations and texting format.  Definitely a message that needs to catch with the younger folks.  Visit the web site here.

The Amazing Action Alphabet by Esther Kehl

The See Hear Do Company!

The Amazing Action Alphabet series It is a simple combination of seeing + hearing + doing that = LEARNING! Researchers and educators have found that people retain 20% of what they hear, 50% of what they see and hear, and up to 90% of what they see, hear, say, and do. The system, called The Amazing Action Alphabet, offers a popular flip chart with alphabet characters and stories, a CD of each alphabet character, activity books, visual aids such as posters and placemats, and mini books. The Amazing Action Alphabet approach is based on a series of engaging alphabet characters, involves seeing, hearing, and ‘doing’ physical actions, making it possible for children to retain more of their learning. The success of the system lies in the combination of multi-sensory, hands on experiences that engage and involve young learners. Esther continually receives enthusiastic feedback from parents and educators who have remarked how fun, simple and effective the Amazing Action Alphabet books are.

I was sent the flip chart and CD to review.  This is a most awesome set for teaching children the phonic sounds of the letters of the alphabet.  The tunes are catchy you may listen to sample on the web site here.  Also view the clip chart and activity book pages.  The pictures are bright and cheery.  What I liked about the flip chart is that while the child is viewing the picture you can read the story for that picture from the back side of the chart; the set up is so neat.  A neat, fun, creative way to captivate your learner.  This is a very awesome teaching tool.  Good for any classroom, resource room, home school, or just a parent that wants to use it to teach your child or reinforce what they are learning.

Humbug, A Christmas Carol by Lee Baker

Winterton is a frozen town with frozen hearts and frozen people. A magical humbug that attracts the magical reindeer of Santa is brought to the town of Winterton by a little orphan girl. The warmth of the little girl and the magical music of the humbug bring Santa, the reindeer and Christmas back to Winterton.

This is a cute story on how an icy city was changed into a nice warm loving town after an orphan girl and a humbug moved in.  I totally love this children's picture book.  The author is wonderful at expressing and describing the cold town of Winterton, very descriptive lots of adjectives.  The illustrations are on a graphic type.  My teenager made comment that maybe even scary to a smaller child.  The theme how an frozen cold unbelieving town becomes a friendly warm believing town  is very well developed.

Lee Baker is the president of Sandman Studios, a visual effects and animation company and has taught courses at UCLA Extension, Loyola Marymount University and the University of Utah. He is the author of the illustrated books “Humbug, A Christmas Carol” and “Beau and the Beanstalk,” and now his latest thriller “Speed of Light.” Lee lives in Utah with his wife and five children.

Mystery of the Puzzle Bones by T. A. Smith

The Mystery of Puzzle Bones is a story about four 12-year-old boys that find a secret hideout and skateboard spot in an unused sewer between their subdivisions. But something is leaving a strange Puzzle of Bones in the Boardunders club house. Something wants to lead them deep down into the sewers – into Hidden Town.

A place that doesn’t want to be found and people who will do anything to protect their secret. Suddenly the danger becomes extreme as they are running for their lives. Who can they trust to help them? One of the boys, Caleb, is a Christian who shares his faith and trust in Jesus which helps lead one of the other boys to the Lord as they go through the perils of the story.

Puzzle Bones is the first of the Boardunders club series. The four young teenagers find a series of huge unused sewer pipes below an abandon home development and love skateboarding under ground where no one knows they are. They have a cool clubhouse with their own Play station and chairs. But then bones start to appear right at the dark entrance to the old pipes. Something is down there, something is arranging the bones.

I just received my review copy of this book on Saturday so I haven't gotten to read too much of it I'm about 1/3 of the way through.  I have been pleasantly surprised with how things are going.  I had never read any of Mr. Smith's books.  He is a new author to me.  However, this book does have a Christian aspect.  I guess I missed that part when I read the blurb sent to be looking for reviewers.  I'm excited to see how things develop in the boardunder club.  I think middle aged boys would love reading this series.

T.A. Smith has been a non-denominational bible teacher in maximum Security Prisons, Juvenile delinquent centers, Rescue Missions, and Youth Groups for over 15 years. He has traveled from the Yucatan to working in fisheries in Alaska. As a ‘Guys study teacher’, he searched for a hard-hitting action adventure series that actually included thoughts and discussion about God. He wanted real discussions that he actually heard men and boys talk about in his classes over the years. Finally, he simply sat down and started writing stories for the guys he knew – and they asked for more stories which has led to a dozen popular tween/teen adventure books.
