This is a very good book to use to help younger children realize that they can go to school, have friends and be involved in everyday activities even with a help issue.  It is a book that will help children understand what celiac disease is and the challenges that are faced and how they can overcome.  A very well written book and wonderful resource.

Diabetes ABC by Dr. Sherry L. Meinberg

Children, parents and caregivers – anyone with a child in their life with diabetes – will benefit from the straightforward facts and sage advice in Diabetes ABC from author Dr. Sherry L. Meinberg.

The diagnosis of diabetes can be confusing and frightening for a child and the people in the child's life. Dr. Sherry L. Meinberg demystifies the condition in Diabetes ABC. The book provides people of all ages with an overview of diabetes, from the emotional impact to the practicalities of managing the disease.

Organized alphabetically by topics relevant to the understanding, management and treatment of diabetes, Diabetes ABC includes sections that address the disease from a child's point of view, followed by information geared toward parents, teachers and caregivers dealing with the responsibilities and repercussions of the condition.

Diabetes ABC is intended to inspire communication and broaden awareness, understanding and empathy.

I thought this book was very informational.  A very good resource book to make children aware of diabetes. The illustrations are limited but the information is good.

Author Lisa Tillinger Johanse on Fast Food Vindication

WRITING FAST FOOD VINDICATION
By Lisa Tillinger Johansen, MS, RD

A lot of people ask what inspired me to write my book, FAST FOOD VINDICATION. It was simple, really. As a registered dietitian teaching nutrition education at a hospital, I see first-hand every day that there are many people who want to learn how to eat healthier meals, wherever they eat. And if they’re carrying too much weight on their frames, they want to know how to lose weight. I speak with thousands of patients every year about a variety of nutrition related topics such as diabetes, weight management, heart disease, hypertension, kidney disease, high cholesterol and more. Diet plays a role in all of these. And, in both my current role as a healthcare provider and as a former executive in the fast food industry, I’m very well aware that the majority of people eat at fast food establishments. And this is okay. We can eat well at fast food restaurants.

There’s an obesity epidemic in the United States and around the world. It is imperative that we be very proactive about turning this epidemic around and learning to eat for health. So, armed with all my knowledge, I knew that I could help a wider group of people through my book, FAST FOOD VINDICATION, than I do at the hospital where I work.

I’m luckier than most first-time authors in that my husband, Roy Johansen, is a successful New York Times bestselling author and Edgar Award recipient. He also co-writes with his mother, Iris Johansen, also a successful New York Times bestselling author. My husband has been a professional writer for over 20 years and is very good at what he does. He encouraged me early on to share my expertise with others by writing this book. He proved to an invaluable source of information on the mechanics of writing a book. And, he provided the much needed support and guidance that everyone needs from time-to-time. I thank him and all the other wonderful people who helped me in this endeavor and helped to make FAST FOOD VINDICATION a reality.

The fast-food industry has long been the whipping boy for all sorts of health ills. Obesity in children and adults? Blame it on fast food. Heart problems, diabetes, high cholesterol? Fast food is the culprit.

Not so, says Lisa Tillinger Johansen in her new book, FAST FOOD VINDICATION. Johansen, a Los Angeles-based registered dietitian, takes the bold position that “fast food is not the enemy, and it can be incorporated into a healthy lifestyle.” In fact, Johansen says, the media’s current wave of anti-fast-food sentiment may actually be detrimental to society’s health and well-being. “By focusing solely on the fast-food industry, the onus is all too often removed from more important factors: personal responsibility and smart choices.”

In FAST FOOD VINDICATION, Johansen takes a lively, informative, and realistic look at our eating habits, and, using her expertise and experience as a registered dietitian, seeks to educate readers on making smart dietary choices no matter where they eat.

“The book refutes the notion that fast food is an evil force in society,” Johansen says. “The laser focus on fast food being the cause of the obesity epidemic is not true, nor is it the complete picture. There’s so much press about how fast food is detrimental to us. In reality, that’s not the case. It’s about how we eat. We can eat poorly at home and at sit-down and fast-food restaurants, but we can also make healthier choices at all of these places. The majority of us don’t make great choices. We need to look at everywhere we eat and how we eat. Personal responsibility plays a big role.”

“Fast-food restaurants make big and easy targets,” Johansen maintains. “So many of us eat at them, and, unfortunately, so many of us are overweight or obese. But research has shown that we eat the majority of our meals at home, so restaurants of all types are just a part of the puzzle.”

“There are a lot of ways to make good choices at fast-food restaurants,” according to Johansen. “For example, a grilled chicken sandwich without mayo, coupled with a side salad with low-fat dressing on the side and apple dippers without the dip, is one good meal that you could put together. Most fast-food restaurants carry entrĂ©e salads, yogurt parfaits, oatmeal, and other, more nutritious foods.”

On the other side of the issue, Johansen notes that an unhealthy fast-food meal could include “fried foods of any type, regular sodas or anything that is double, triple, quadruple or more.”

With the publication of FAST FOOD VINDICATION, Johansen hopes to “present the side of an issue that hasn’t really been discussed much in the media. By doing so, it should ultimately help people to learn to look at the big picture and make appropriate changes to their diets as needed.”

Made to Crave by Lysa Terkeurst

WoW want a series!  I was so excited when I was accepted to do this Made to Crave Tour.  I received the book back in Dec. However, the participant's guide and dvd didn't come until this past Wednesday. I've had the book read for several weeks now.  It was awesome.  I wish the study guide and dvd would have come sooner so I could have worked them along with the book.  Anyway they are awesome too.  I had to hurry through them and not do the weekly sessions and take my time, but I will go back through them again and use them as they were intended to be used.

Lysa is absolutely excellent on the dvd sessions.  I had to cram them in in three days instead of 6 weeks as was intended.

Main theme through the whole book and series is We as women are made to crave God not food.  Boy is it stressed.  Lysa explains that we must fix the foundation before we can fix the upper part that is broken.  It isn't he How-to, but the Want-to that makes the lasting changes.  We must keep focused on who we are in every situation.  We need to learn to control the food and not let it control us.  Lysa gives weekly assignments in her sessions.  They are outlined in the participant's guide as well as her outline on the sessions.  You are able to jot notes and keep tabs right in the participant's guide. Lysa also stresses this isn't a diet book, but the missing link between the diet plan you choose and reaching lasting success.  It is a spiritual commitment, a journey.  We need to choose a diet plan and exercise program that we will actually do.  Lysa tries to get her viewer to grab ahold of the thought that God is magnificent and we should desire to crave Him not food.  He wants us to depend on Him daily; He wants to be our portion.  Victory is made by the choices that we make and we can have the victory if we choose wisely.  God wants the best for us.  Also in the participant's guide are six daily sessions to do on your own following through what Lysa discussions in the sessions.

In the book, each chapter ends with pa personal reflection.  We learn that there are lessons to be learned and perspectives to be gained when we embrace healthy choices.  We need to learn how to consume food, which is permissible and beneficial, without it consuming us.  Food was never meant to fill the deepest places of our heart....that is reserved for God only.  We tend to tie our happy to the wrong things.

This was an excellent study and I highly recommend it.  Now that I have it all I need to go back through it the proper way.  I encourage you to go to the Made to Crave web site and probe around.  There are many videos to watch and things to look at.   I do trust that you'll consider letting Lysa help you in Craving after God and not Food.

Blog tour schedule:

and DVD

Just because a woman finally fits into her skinny jeans doesn't mean she's won her battle with food. Too often, women overlook the spiritual component to their physical struggle with healthy eating. Made to Crave taps into the desires God gave you to consume food without letting food consume you!

Made to Crave is the missing link between a woman's desire to be healthy and the spiritual empowerment necessary to make that happen. The reality is we were made to crave. Craving isn't a bad thing. But we must realize God created us to crave more of him. Many of us have misplaced that craving by overindulging in physical pleasures instead of lasting spiritual satisfaction. If you are struggling with unhealthy eating habits, you can break the "I'll start again Monday" cycle, and start feeling good about yourself today. Learn to stop beating yourself up over the numbers on the scale. Discover that your weight loss struggle isn't a curse but rather a blessing in the making, and replace justifications that lead to diet failure with empowering go-to scripts that lead to victory. You can reach your healthy weight goal - and grow closer to God in the process. This is not a how-to book. This is not the latest and greatest dieting plan. This book is the necessary companion for you to use alongside whatever healthy lifestyle plan you choose. This is a book and Bible study to help you find the "want to" in making healthy lifestyle choices. 224 pages. Companion Bible study DVD set also available. http://madetocrave.org/purchase-resources/

21 Simple Things You Can Do to Help Someone with Diabetes by Cherie Burbach

My review:

This book is a very fast and easy read. If you have a family member, loved one, or friend with diabetes this book is one you'll want to read. Burbach shares with her readers simple things you, a non-diabetic, can do to help support and encourage your friend going through different life-style changes now that they've been diagnosed with diabetes. Burbach doesn't so much as give you information about diabetes; however, she gives you ideas to help and encourage the diabetic. She gives you Do's and Don'ts as to what to say or not say, and do or not do to help. Being a diabetic myself I thought this book had really good suggestions in it for those that want to help and encourage a diabetic loved one in their life's pursuit to live long with diabetes.

Ambushed by Grace by Shelly Beach

"The mystery of care-giving is the mystery of grace", says author Shelly Beach in her book Ambushed by Grace. This book is an inspirational book to help those that are finding themselves on the caregiving road. This journey though at times my seem hard and senseless if we allow God to do his work we will come to the end of journey transformed into a new being.

This book offers practical advice, web sites, phone numbers and wisdom from experts in the field of geriatrics and family counseling. This book was written with the purpose to draw you, the reader (caregiver), into the Word of God and to sensitize you to the work of the Spirit of god in your life. The goal of this book, and care-giving for that matter, is to help the reader (caregiver) see the need to carry out the double-love command.

You'll enjoy sprinkled through each chapter:
Roadside Rest - Scripture meditations
Roadside Realities - a static or fact
Roadside Assistance - a tip giving help or ideas

At the close of each chapter the author shares some meditation and personal application questions. Along with scriptures for further meditations, a prayer and resources that go along with the chapter theme.
Chapter themes include:
  • expectations and realities of care-giving
  • imperatives of caregiving
  • helping us see our loved one in a new way
  • forgiveness
  • * 5 steps to forgiveness
  • * 6 garments we must put on to make forgiveness possible
  • dealing with selfishness using the MARIE principle
  • dealing with guilt and grime (hidden dust bunnies)
  • basic steps for building boundaries sharing the PAUSE principle
  • our role as conduits of God's grace; being a grace dumper
  • cultivating a Spirit of Joy
  • surviving caregiving
  • maturing

While caregiving is messy work it teaches us things we'd probably never learn and gives us opportunities that we'd not have in ways we may have never known. Caregiving is hard work. It is a journey. Caregiving comes in many shapes and forms. Where caregiving is concerned you can never give a fraction of what you receive in return if completed by the double-love command.

You'll find helpful things such as:
  • caregiver resource listings
  • things to consider if elderly should move in with you
  • tips on caregiver burnout
  • tips on phone conversations
  • list of caregiver's helpful tasks
  • tips on long-distance caregiving
  • tips for improving communication
  • suggestions for creating shared stories
  • suggestions for decision-making and compromise
  • pages to fill in with vital information for quick references
  • assessing the elderly's driving
  • overseeing finances
  • and also turning toward you, yourself, becoming the elder one day

With both my parents' caregiving is getting closer, one has Parkinson's and the other Crohn's disease, I found the long-distance caregiving tips helpful since they live over 800 miles away. There is so much good information in this book. I very highly recommend this book to any person that is presently in a caregiving role or finds themselves in one sometime down life's road.

Real Solutions for Busy Moms by Kathy Ireland

According to the author, motherhood is the most important career in the world. I can wholeheartedly AMEN Ireland for this statement. However, you can't do everything all at once. Maybe you can do it all, but we can spread ourselves too thin. We must learn to take time for ourselves as mothers.
The author says, "I've come to realize that it's truly important to make 'you' one of your priorities. If family really matter, remember that you're a member of your family. When you take care of yourself, your family will benefit more than you can imagine. "

Each chapter of the book is designed to help you win in life as a mom.
  • daily issues you face are discussed
  • questions and answers
  • solutions to solving the need
  • a checklist for staying on track
  • advice from experts to help

This book will help you remove obstacles to reach your dreams and destiny as a mom and person. You can enjoy the life meant for you.

Topics discussed in this book are ~
  • finances
  • building a happy home
  • health
  • safety
  • becoming your best
  • balancing care of others as well as yourself
  • faith

Christmas Cookie Rules...

Christmas Cookie Rules...

1. If you eat a Christmas cookie fresh out of the oven, it has no calories because everyone knows that the first cookie is the test and thus calorie free.

2. If you drink a diet soda after eating your second cookie, it also has no calories because the diet soda cancels out the cookie calories.

3. If a friend comes over while you're making your Christmas cookies and needs to sample, you must sample with your friend. Because your friend's first cookie is calorie free, (rule #1) yours is also. It would be rude to let your friend sample alone and, being the friend that you are, that makes your cookie calorie free.

4. Any cookie calories consumed while walking around will fall to your feet and eventually fall off as you move. This is due to gravity and the density of the caloric mass.

5. Any calories consumed during the frosting of the Christmas cookies will be used up because it takes many calories to lick excess frosting from a knife without cutting your tongue.

6. Cookies colored red or green have very few calories. Red ones have three and green ones have five - one calorie for each letter. Make more red ones!

7. Cookies eaten while watching "Miracle on 34th Street" have no calories because they are part of the entertainment package and not part of one's personal fuel.

8. As always, cookie pieces contain no calories because the process of breaking causes calorie leakage.

9. Any cookies consumed from someone else's plate have no calories since the calories rightfully belong to the other person and will cling to their plate. We all know how calories like to CLING!

10. Any cookies consumed while feeling stressed have no calories because cookies used for medicinal purposes NEVER have calories. It's a rule!

So, go out and enjoy those Christmas Cookies - we only get them this time of year!
