Bedtime Stories and Prayers by Dandi Daley Mackall & Kathleen Long Bostrom

This book has lovely bedtime prayers that will delight young and old alike.  The rhyming prayers is just what is needed to send your little one off to la-la land thinking sweet thoughts.  Just the prescription for wonderful dreams.  What a better way to send your child off to sleep than thinking on God and his goodness.  Just the right words to Bless the night with.  The illustrations are soft water color but full of color and  very delightful.

American Patriots: Answering the Call to Freedom by Rick Santorum

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness are worth fighting for, well that is what the men and women found in Rich Santorum's book thought at least.  If you are truly an American Patriot then this is a book that you need to read.  It is a WOW book and will put you on fire for defending your freedom, which is quickly being snatched away by a tyrannical government.  This book is about individuals who embraced the ideals laid out by our founding fathers.  Patrick Henry's famous words "give me liberty or give me death", were the words of every patriot Santorum  featured in this book - and as I see it with the way our country is heading may have to be the words of more patriots in the very near feature.  Most of the patriots in this book aren't your common household names; they are ones that were the true patriots of freedom, the ones you don't hear about and didn't want to be acknowledged as a hero of their time.  They came from every walk of life, but they rose to the challenge of their time. At the close of the book is a copy the Declaration of Independence, if you've never read it, read it and a list of the names of those that signed it.  There hasn't been a better time for this book to hit the shelves than in 2012 and not a better time for a push for reading it than right now.  Are you going to Answer the Call and stand up against those that want to put us back in shackles?  We are working toward another Stalin/Hitler era if we American Patriots don't stand up and fight like true Americans.  Hail, AMERICAN PATRIOTS!

Visit Rick Santorum's  Patriot Voices site here.

The United States of America was founded and established by ordinary citizens just like you and me. In their struggle for independence, these heroic men and women willingly shed their blood, sweat, and tears—often sacrificing their own lives and fortunes in order to hand down the precious legacy of freedom we all enjoy today. Now is the time for a new generation of American patriots to rise up and join in the fight. Now is the time for every American to return to the virtues, values, and ideals that formed our foundation of freedom, and enable America to remain a great nation, a powerful democracy, and a beacon of hope for the world.

American Patriots highlights the heroic men and women who valiantly fought to secure our God-given rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—not only for themselves and their children, but for countless future generations. Their stories are a true reminder of the extraordinary faith, courage, and determination that set this country on the path to greatness centuries ago, and an inspiration for future generations of great American patriots.

She's Got Issues by Nicole Unice

We all have issues in life and Nicole has nailed it down to 5.  She has found that most women have at least one of the five issues in her life.  In her book She's Got Issues she discusses the 5 issues over 10 chapters taking two chapters per issue.   The first chapter she helps the reader define the issue along with an assessment to take to see if you have a problem with the issue. and the second chapter she explores effective ways to deal with the issue.  Each chapter has a prayer, journal exercise and group discussion there is also a web link you can connect to and Nicole gives a few minute encouraging talk on the issue.  There are scriptures listed to help with the issue as well as questions for personal reflection.  The DVD has a participates guide that can be downloaded for groups to use also each issue has a character interview to watch (5 min) a journal inventory entry time as well as a 20 min. session where Nicole will go over the issue with biblical principles added.  There are also bonus discussion questions to use in the group setting.  I haven't found anything not to like about this book and DVD curriculum.  It would make an excellent fall ladies study.

The 5 Issues discussed are:
  • Control
  • Insecurity
  • Comparison
  • Fear
  • Anger/Unforgiveness
Some issues I could easily relate to where others I found were less of a problem for me in my life because they had already been dealt with.

I Couldn't Love You More by Jason Ingram & Matt Hammitt

Be sure to read to the end of this post as there is a giveaway offer included with this post.

This is a very sweet short story, originally written as a song, about a parents love for their child.  I don't think there could be a nicer book to have on the shelf if you have children to remind them of your unconditional love for them.  The illustrations, colorful, bright and cheery, are just a sweet as the message itself.  It is just an adorable book to be loved by all, young and old alike.

Paws and Tales: putting others first #4

Chuck Swindoll's DVD series Paws & Tales is a wonderful way to present good Christian morals and values with young children.  These animated stories with character traits and values are excellent.  I'd share them with any young child that visited in my home.  Right at the beginning of each story Chuck Swindoll does about a 2-3 minute talk about what the lesson will be about, this may lose the youngest of viewers, but if they can get through that they will be captivated by the animated characters and the story and lessons that are presented in these dvds.  The stories are sound Bible lessons with wonderful values for our children today to learn they aren't getting it from Hollywood that is for sure.

New Kid Catastraphes by Bill Myers

The main character is very very ditsy and blond though she isn't ~ this is portrayed in everything she does, nothing seems to go as planned for her.  Her family has moved to a new home where she meets new friends and new challenges.  She is visited by time travelers and they need her help to get back home. Much humor is intertwined in this book while the time travelers use gadgets that have gone wacky and you never know what might happen next.  Plans are changed as they use these gadgets when they don't get the outcome they were seeking.  While there is much mayhem and laughter throughout the book the characters learn what is truly means to be kind, patient, loving and honest in all things. My teen daughter and I have enjoyed reading this book as a read-a-loud.

Chuck Swindoll's Paws & Tales: God Cares for You DVD

I was so excited after watching the first story on this DVD.  The bible story message is there in cartoon form that is bound to hold your child's attention.  This DVD has two stories on it The Good Shepherd and A Good Foundation.  There are also bonus features of songs the words pop up on the screen with a dot that moves so a child that reads can sing along with the song.  There are also some activity sheets that can be printed off if you put the DVD into your computer and open the adobe file along with adult teaching resources to use with the movie as discussion starters.  The movie can be watched in English or Spanish.  Each movie is about 25 minutes in length.  I applaud Mr. Swindoll and all that had a hand in producing this wonderful Christian bible story movie series.  I look forward to more to come.  Read to the end of this post and find out how you can win a copy.

Let Every Heart prepare Him Room by Nancy Guthrie

This is a nice little devotional to ring in the Christmas season with your family.  It covers the whole month of
December (31 days).  Each day has a main portion of reading with discussion starts to get the whole family sharing their thoughts.  There are pages randomly placed in the book to write your families highlights so that they can be remembered in years to come.  Also sporadically throughout the book are added Christmas songs to help spur on the discussion.  This is a nice little family devotional and includes items for the young as well as the older ones in the family, wee ones or teens, or the seasoned (aged).

The One Year Mother/Daughter Devo by Dannah Gresh with Janet Mylin

Hey moms, if you want some M/D time in God's Word then why not consider Danna Gresh's devo book just for this special time.  You don't have to do the Devo together, but what better way to spend time with your daughter than studying God's Word.  This book is very unique Here are some things you'll find in this book:

Each day will have:
  • a Bible Blast section where you can read a portion of God's Word that goes along with the devotional
  • also a Girl Gab where mom and daughter can share their own experiences together.

Some days you'll experience:
  • a Language Lab where you'll learn some important words in the Christian faith and their meaning.  An easy-to-swallow theology lesson written on your level.
  • Amazing animals and what you can learn about them from the Bible.
  • Meditation Moments are devotions that help us think on certain passages in God's Word and practice just meditating on them
  • Kickin' Kraft days have a easy to make craft to go along with the devotional to help you remember the lesson learned for that day

I thought this was a very neat book and written on a pre-teen girls level that they can understand.  It handles issues that they'll come up against in their life.  Why not think about your princess finding this under the Christmas tree.  What a way to help her start off a brand New Year.

Still House Pond by Jan Watson

The characters and plot seemed good to me. I had no problem with that. The theme of the book: “All things work together for good to them who love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.” ~ Romans 8:28. The characters find that they must depend fully on God and believe that whatever happens is in His plan. Very good theme.

I found this book a little hard to get into. I don't know why. It took me awhile to really want to read the book. I don't care for books that don't grab me right at the start. I don't know if because this is book #2 in the series and I didn't read book #1 so don't know what went on before. Maybe that was my problem. Some series that is how it is. I have never read Jan Watson but I'm willing to give her another try if the opportunity arises. I haven't totally crossed her off my list of authors.

Her mama, Copper, is often gone helping to birth babies, and Lilly has to stay home. When Aunt Alice sends a note inviting her to visit in the city, Lilly is excited to go, and Copper reluctantly agrees to let her. Later, when they hear the news that the train crashed, Copper and her husband, John, rush to find out if their daughter is injured . . . or even alive.
