First Time: The Legend of Garison Fitch by Samuel Ben White

 

She looked as if she still wanted to touch him, but kept her distance.  Then, it was as if she were seeing him in a whole new light as she said, "Wait a minute, you've changed.  How did your hair get so long in two seconds?  How did you grow a mustache that quick?  And those clothes?  Except for that jacket, you look like you're ... from the revolutionary war or something.  And you look older."  She looked extremely concerned as she implored, "Garison, what happened?"

He demanded more forcefully, pronouncing each word carefully and distinctly, as if she might not have heard him before, "Who are you?"

"Heather," she replied, as if it were something he should know.  She took a step closer, but he took a step further away, backing down the workbench, keeping one hand on the cabinet as if it would steady him.

"Heather?  Heather who?  I don't know a Heather.  What kind of name is that, anyway?  A plant name?"

"You don't remember me?" she asked, seeming totally at a loss—and looking genuinely worried.

"Why should I?"

"Heather Fitch," she told him.  "Heather Dawson Fitch."

"Fitch?  You're not related to me.  Just what are you trying to pretend here?"

            She reached out to touch him again and again he slapped her hand away, this time with more force.  As she brought the hand back, seemingly shocked that the slap had stung, she said, "I'm not just related to you, Garison.  I'm your wife."

New Kid Catastraphes by Bill Myers

The main character is very very ditsy and blond though she isn't ~ this is portrayed in everything she does, nothing seems to go as planned for her.  Her family has moved to a new home where she meets new friends and new challenges.  She is visited by time travelers and they need her help to get back home. Much humor is intertwined in this book while the time travelers use gadgets that have gone wacky and you never know what might happen next.  Plans are changed as they use these gadgets when they don't get the outcome they were seeking.  While there is much mayhem and laughter throughout the book the characters learn what is truly means to be kind, patient, loving and honest in all things. My teen daughter and I have enjoyed reading this book as a read-a-loud.

The Gift by Bryan Litfin

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Bryan earned a bachelor’s degree in print journalism from the University of Tennessee as well as a master’s degree in historical theology at Dallas Theological Seminary. From there he went to the University of Virginia, taking a PhD in the field of ancient church history. He is currently professor of theology at Moody Bible Institute in downtown Chicago, where he has been since 2002. He teaches courses in theology, church history, and Western civilization from the ancient and medieval periods. He is the author of Getting to Know the Church Fathers: An Evangelical Introduction (Brazos, 2007), as well as several scholarly articles and essays. Bryan has always enjoyed epic adventure stories as well as historical fiction, but most of his reading these days is taken up by academia.

Today Bryan lives in downtown Wheaton in a Victorian house built in 1887. He and his wife Carolyn are parents to two children. For recreation Bryan enjoys basketball, traveling, and hiking anywhere there are mountains. The Litfins attend College Church in Wheaton, where Bryan has served on the Board of Missions and as a deacon. He also helped start Clapham School, a Christian primary school in Wheaton using the classical model of education.

Attack at the Arena by Marianne Hering & Paul McCusker

Join Patrick and Beth in the Imagination Station for an adventure of your life.  They are transported back in time to ancient Rome.  They take on the form of a monk and slave.  What a fun way for 7-10 year olds to use their imagination.  If your child isn't familiar with Odyssy and Mr. Whittaker's mysterious invention of the imagination station then what a way to introduce them to it then in the form of a book.  They will have a time of their life being transported back in time.  check out the web site here.  You can get more fun facts about Vikings and the animals of Greenland while learning about the books and more.  This was a super book.  The reading level is 2-3 grade, but  K and 1 graders may enjoy it as a read a-loud as well. There is also a fun puzzle page at the end of the book.

The Final Summit by Andy Andrews

All travelers through-out time are to meet for the final summit.  There they are to figure out how to save humanity from destruction.  The question that all travelers must answer is this: 

What does humanity need to do individually and collectively to restore itself to the pathway toward successful civilization?

They must come up with the answer before time runs out and with only 5 tries.  Will they be able to do it?  That and the answer are in The Final Summit book that Andy Andrew has written.  What an answer for anyone to come up with. will they be able to come up with the answer in the time aloud.  How much time do they have no one knows, but they do know they can not go back and gain time nor do they know how much time is remaining.  All they know is that the sand in the hour glass is falling to the bottom and only time will tell how much time is really left. 

This book is not a real long book. However, it is packed full of thought provoking quotes, sayings and ideas from people in history.

Gallimore by Michelle Griep

This week I'm going to do a week long spotlight on Author Michelle Griep and her book Gallimore. This is her first book so she's new on store bookshelves. I hope you all will come back each day as Michelle has provided me with many guest articles and interview questions to post all week. This should be fun. When we are done you'll know who she is and hopefully want to read her book. Let's get started.

And now for me review:
If you love anything to do with knights and Medieval times then this is the book for you. I can't say that I have read any Medieval time books prior to reading this one. Michelle will make you feel as though you are right there living in that time period.
With a flash of light travel back in time with Jess to the year of 1314 where castels, knights, chivalry, daggers, swords, ravens, and peasants were all a part of life. Jess living in the twentieth century is thrown back in time and becomes a captive of Sir Colwyn only to be turned over to his evil brother, Tarne. Jess finds that she must draw her strength in God whom she left behind after the death of her husband in the twentieth century. She doesn't know which is better being the captive of a knight of cold steel or his brother the pulsating evil. Jess learns what it truly means to be set free from her self-enforced bondage. She learns to stop running and face things head on. Jess and Colwyn learn that visiting the past can be good but leaving the hurts behind and moving on in life is even better.

Characters you will come to love or maybe disdain
Cole - professor of history. He's eccentric so Jess thinks
Sir Colwyn - is never predictable, but a fine trustworthy man who has learned to hid his true self. He is Jess' nemesis so she thinks.
Lord Tarne - is just out right evil and a man much feared; respects no one
Tarline - a servant in the house
Tagg - a stable boy and...... oh I can't tell his other identity you'll just have to read the book and find out. I was much surprised. I wouldn't want to ruin it for you.
and of course there's Jessica known as Jess - fire and brimstone one minute; soft and vulnerable another. Knows how to push Colwyn to extreme ways. She's a nuisance and plague to Colwyn so he thinks. She's persistent and determined.
